Horticulture

Introduction

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is covered with profuse green cover including great flora, fauna and with conserved biodiversity. Greenery management in the institute is carried out by Horticulture section under Estate Office. The horticulture section contributes to the beautification of the campus. The total area under green cover is 225 acres approx. Institute maintains a plant nursery for the propagation of saplings of various species for gardens development. 

Out of 225 acres green cover; a total of 171.41 acres is under Landscape gardening under maintenance and remaining 53.59 acres is under Forest plantation and hill plantation. The greenery includes native fruit trees, avenue trees, medicinal plants. Institute meets 80-85% green cover requirement of the total proposed area.

Activities of Horticulture section

  • The main activities of the Horticulture section
    • Tree Plantation drives
    • Landscape Gardening- planning, development& maintenance
    • Support during the events in the institute by supplying potted plants and making flower rangoli.
    • Contribute to the development of kids play areas & play grounds
    • Tree census and maintenance
    • Conducting biodiversity audit
    • Tree care and preservation
    • Conducting tree health risk assessment- practicing mitigation measures for the preservation of trees.
    • Conducting green space audit
    • Implementing sustainable practices in horticultural activities
    • Collection and disposal of dry leaves and garden waste
    • Pre-monsoon tree trimming and cutting with valid permission from BMC Tree authority
